Media: music magazine lockdown

My music magazine Is lockdown a punk rock magazine that focuses on eccentric and different music my magazine shows conventions that real music magazines show, on my front cover I have the artist in the middle the text around the edge and at the bottom, with the font at the top, these are general features of a front cover.  I’ve used a variety of fonts and shot types and varied the layout of each page but keep a theme that runs through e.g. colour. Real media products have ads on the front or inside for contests or products I’ve put contests on and in my magazine. The font colour and type I've used is stereotypical of a punk rock magazines, I used red, grey and black which are very dark colours that represent anger and rebellion and reflect the themes in punk rock. The font had to be bold and square, very in your face. whereas in the double page spread I used black and blue, this ads a lighter feel to the magazine, but still with the punk back bone to it. The light blue makes the pages seem more feminine and suggests a more emotional theme.

The audience for my music magazine is alternative different outcasts to society who like the music to represent them, that has key themes of standing up against society and healing from problems, these themes most come up in punk and rock music but my magazine will also show eccentric themes influence by artists like Emily autumn who uses a violin in most of her music but electronic punk at the same time.

My magazine attracts my audience by the darker colours running through reds and primary bold colours that represent anger and bold/ standing out from the crowd also it has a lot of big artists as well as small artists that are well known in the genre also contests involve tickets to gigs and festivals like download a big festival for punk/rock lovers.

The media institution I thought could distribute my media product would be Bauer as they mostly focus on rock music and produce Kerrang! Which is a magazine aiming at the same audience and that I looked at when making my magazine.

My magazine represents certain social groups because of clothing by having darker clothing associated with punk rock lovers. The text I used in my magazines font and colour is dark and bold with harsh Sharpe edges which suit the audience, also there is a lot of references to festivals and tours know by the punk rock community. The text language is pretty formal in punk rock magazines abbreviations and text language normally avoided so I used certain language that would represent this when doing my interview, also when doing my interview I had to ask questions the audience would be interested in, their music career and tours, I had to avoid questions revolving gossip and relationships as these are more suited for pop music magazines.

During the process of making my music magazine I learnt a lot more about photo editing and how to use editing software as well as things like cut out studio to make my images fit perfect in my magazine, I learnt more about serif page plus and improved my skills of using this software. I also learnt a lot about certain things I had to include in my magazine and how they should be laid out to meet the conventions of a music magazine. I also learnt about font websites and editing websites such as dafont.com and pixlr that I used for the construction of my magazine.

Looking back at my preliminary task I learnt how to make things look professional and how to use software to make things look effective. Also position of text is important to make the magazine look better and would be more attractive to the audience. Also I’ve learnt a lot about composition of the photo and how the artist should be stood i.e. lead at the front the show importance, and how important direct address is to draw the reader and also to make an intimate feeling between reader and the artist.
